Milk Bar by Cafe Ish, Redfern

Sorry for the delay in posts, been busy over the holiday period, but I'm back!. JHL and I visited Cafe Ish a while back last year in December. Being big fans of the former Cafe Ish in Surry Hills, we were excited to hear it was reinvented. Milk Bar is situated close to Redfern Station and a short walk from Sydney Uni. As the name suggests it, it resembles a modern day milk bar furnished with a jukebox and arcade games.

We ordered Ai's Freaking Awesome Chicken Wings each with Crab sauce and Vinegar and Shallot sauce ($13). The name says it all. The generous serving of sauce topped on the free range crispy battered chicken wings was the perfect combination. Be prepared for some finger licking goodness! Our only complaint would be a number of the wings turned out to be just the tip or 'handle' of the chicken wing so we ended up eating mostly batter.  They probably should not use greaseproof paper to line the basket either, as we were a tad turned off by the oil residue left over at the bottom. It is definitely not for those watching their cholesterol levels.

JHL also ordered the Double Cheeseburger with  2 beef patties, cheese, pickles, ketchup and grilled onions $9). Although it looks small, it was the perfect size to go along with the wings. The melted cheese was oozing out of the two patties which were sandwiched together by freshly baked burger bun.

For an extra couple or so dollars, you can also choose to add toppings to the burgers such as Japanese (pickled dakion, carrot, cabbage and wasabi mayo), Italian (rocket, tomato, aoili, balsamic, parmesan), Korean (Kim chi, chilli paste, pickled daikon) and Aussie (beetroot, egg, bacon, lettuce and tomato).

I ordered the chicken burger with wasabi mayo and a side of chips also with wasabi mayo ($4). Although it wasn't bad, it was nothing special. I kept staring down JHL's cheeseburger. The overload of wasabi mayo was also a bit overwhelming, but it's good in small doses!

The karaage soft shell crab omelette which I've tried at the former Cafe Ish, is also a must try! I wish this place had opened earlier when I was at Sydney Uni.  I would want to go back to try their brunch items,  range of milkshakes including rocky road and  peanut butter and jelly milkshake and  their Malteaser tart!!
